2013 AEC Wheelchair Races
The students and staff at the Alternative Education Center held their first Faculty/Student “Wheelchair Race” on Friday, February 8, 2013, in the Cafeteria. The event was coordinated by School Nurse, Donna Vickers, R.N., with the help of Rita Alexander from the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Students have been collecting money for the Pasta-For-Pennies campaign benefiting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society for the past three weeks. Students have collected before, but not with a Wheelchair Race. The classes in ACE are divided into teams called houses. Each house has a designated color along with a mascot and slogan. They have been in competition with each other to collect the most money and that winning house will get a free lunch at Olive Garden. Last year we collected $1,022.63. The campus set a goal to break that record and they did. The students have been selling paper chain links for 10 cents apiece and making chains and hanging them all down the halls at the AEC, they are everywhere! The campus also had crazy hat/sock day, and the final event was the wheelchair race in the cafeteria. The teams decorated each wheelchair and students and staff for the houses participated in a relay race around a set course. This year, Valour Knights, the blue team won the race! Each member of the racing team won a $5.00 gift card to Walmart. The student bought tickets to see the race and they put their names on the back of the tickets for a drawing for a $25.00 gift card which was also given. The houses are;
Arete – Excellence – Green -Dragons
Immanadari – Integrity – Yellow – Gryphons
Istrajati – Perseverance – Red – Minotaours
Valour – Courage – Blue – Knights
The winning team for the Olive Garden Lunch was the yellow team, which collected $362.50. Next were the Green team with $355.79, the Red team with $228.38 and the Blue team with 149.40. This comes to a grant total of $1,096.07! This beats our total for last year by $73.44! This is really amazing because there are only 105 students in ACE. This is an average of $10.44 per student that was collected and/or given. Jerry Gray, Principal and the entire Staff are so proud of them and congratulate all of them on a job well done. They are all winners! The real winners were the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and the patients who will benefit from their donations and hard work.
